Gateway is still a relevant name brand. It was a top PC brand for years. It lost some of its limelight due to Dell, but they are still kicking. These Gateway desktop aren't the latest and greatest, but they offer great value. You get the most bang for your buck here. A typical P4 desktop computer, no matter what brand, will typically sell for around $100. These are great PCs for normal users. You may want to buy one for yourself, a child, or a friend who you want to chat with online. These desktops are great for those purposes. Not only that, they are actually pretty fast.
As I've stated on other pages, my minimum recommended 2GB of RAM will help these PCs along nicely. I suggest having at least 2GB. You may find computers with only 256MB (1/4 GB) or 512MB (1/2 GB) of RAM. Those computers will typically support at least 2GB. If you buy a computer that has less than 2GB of RAM, UPGRADE it. You won't be disappointed. Windows needs a certain amount of RAM to run properly. Every open application and TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) program requires RAM. With only 256MB of RAM, your computer will run excruciatingly slow. It will also use the hard drive as "virtual RAM" which will shorten the life of your hard drive. It is needless wear and tear on the mechanical parts of a hard drive. Upgrade your RAM.

This is something anyone can do with very little research. The type of RAM you'll need depends on the model of computer you purchase. Perform a search via Google or you favorite search engine for the computer model, looking for specs. Once you find the type of RAM you need from the specifications, purchase two 1gb sticks of that RAM. Installation is very easy. Pop open the case, look for something that looks like what you bought. Touch a metal part of the case to get rid of static. Preferably you'll want to ground yourself to the case with a static band. Remove the old RAM, and replace it with the RAM you purchase. Make sure everything is seated properly. When you start up the computer you may get a notice that the amount of RAM has changed. You can safely ignore this warning.
