With the iMac, Apple tries to simplify computer setup and desktop space usage. The iMac is a pretty computer, without a doubt. The latest versions are made from aluminum and are very solid. They have many features that are hard to find in other computers. The all-in-one design means that there is less clutter on your desk. With a wireless keyboard and mouse, the only cord you'll find on the iMac is the power cord. Compare this to the many cords you would see on a typical PC. Here is a classic image showing the difference between an iMac and a typical PC. Not that in this historic image, the iMac actually had a wired mouse and keyboard (even though the mouse plugged into the keyboard). This has been further simplified with wireless technology.

Yes, that's the entire computer. The newest version of the iMac even has an improved stand that swivels effortlessly.

So where did all the wires go?

Simply put, they are in the iMac. The monitor contains the motherboard and other components. The disk drives and everything else is built into the monitor. It's much easier to keep your desk tidy with an iMac.

Other than tidiness, what else does an iMac offer?

These features come built-in:

  • Bluetooth
  • 802.11n wireless
  • Gigabit ethernet
  • Firewire and USB ports
  • Amazingly, a great built-in sound system with sub-woofer
  • iSight web cam and microphone
  • DVD burner

All of this coupled with a truly gorgeous display, make the iMac a stunning new addition to your desk. My next computer will be an iMac. The newest models have an LED backlit LCD display that is very bright and clear.

When shopping for an iMac, confirm that it is one of the modern Intel-based iMacs. Previous generations of iMac desktops used G4 and G5 processors. Current Mac applications are built to work with Intel-based computers. Do not buy a G4 or G5 iMac.

Here are a few of the best deals we could find on iMacs:
